About Us
Coffee del Rey was formed by LaWanna and Larry McPherson in their desire to create a for profit organization where the profits could be
used to support charities and causes.
LaWanna quit her job at the hospital 7 years ago to begin working at the church where she has an opportunity to work with people on a daily basis. While working in the church office, she was able to pursue her passion for helping those who were hurting, sick, poor, outcast or just needed someone to talk to. She has been involved in missions, the CARE team and her and her husband are Life Group Leaders.
Larry retired from the work a day world 5 years ago and has spent his time volunteering in organizations and efforts to help the less fortunate. He has volunteered for the last 3 years with Global Aid Network (GAiN). GAiN is a humanitarian aid organization that provides for the neediest in the world. Larry spent a good portion of 2010 and 2011 working in and with Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January 2010. He is also heavily involved in GAiN’s clean water initiatives around the world.
After reading the book Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie of TOMS shoes, the ideas of how to use Coffee del Rey really began to solidify. Not only would most of the profits be shared with our favorite causes but we would begin our own “one for one” kind of initiative. TOMS provides one pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair of shoes they sell. We were so excited about this concept we decided that we wanted to do the same.
Since it did not make sense to provide coffee for coffee, we wanted a program that would impact the poor in third world countries. Because we are interested in helping solve hunger in the world and coffee is an agricultural product, we felt that providing seeds made tremendous sense. Today many organizations provide food to those with severe malnutrition. This is what is needed in many cases, but at some point people want and need to begin to work for themselves. This is where seeds come in. Providing seeds to families and communities allows them to grow their own food and breaks the cycle of need for food to be provided. Families and communities that have received seeds have been able to not only grow enough for their needs but once established they are able to begin to sell to others; thereby starting economy and a way to support themselves. By partnering with GAiN, Coffee del Rey will provide one Harvester pack of seeds (5 packets of seeds) for each pound of coffee we sell.
